Desktop Risk Assessment

Some methods of on-site geotechnical surveying can be disruptive and intrusive to the ground. If that is something you are looking to avoid, we can help with our desktop risk assessment service.

It’s a common misunderstanding that a majority of surveying requires getting your hands dirty on a client’s site. The reality is that on a lot of those sites, essential surveying was already completed years in the past. Repeating these surveys can sometimes be a waste of your resources, which is why we offer desktop risk assessments as an alternative.

Purpose

A desktop risk assessment allows us to gain a vital understanding of the ground without the need for rigorous testing and heavy machinery. If you’re building on a brownfield site, there should be existing reports on the ground’s conditions. Performing surveys on these sites may yield results already known, so by taking the time to conduct a desktop risk assessment, you can save time and money.

If anything of concern appears in these reviews, such as historic contamination of the ground, you can pursue further testing if required. In addition, the risk assessment may identify data on the ground but from a period in the past. Since the initial report, the surrounding area may have changed, affecting the ground’s properties. In these cases, we can perform further on-site tests to ensure your data is recent and more relevant.

Process

Our expert team use historical records, environmental data and past geological appraisals to ensure you avoid unnecessary steps during development. If there are issues with the ground, they would have been found and resolved at a later stage in development anyway. A desktop risk assessment relies solely on secondary data, allowing you to fix it sooner. In 2025, the technology and information available will allow these assessments to be more thorough and accurate.

By taking a qualitative approach to your geotechnical surveying requirements, you gain a broader understanding of the ground on your site, allowing you to plan and prepare development more effectively.
